How to Create WooCommerce Coupons and Manage Usage Limits
WooCommerce includes coupon codes without requiring another plugin. You can offer percentage or fixed discounts, decide which purchases qualify, and control how often a code can be used.

Enable coupons in WooCommerce
- In WP Admin, go to WooCommerce → Settings → General.
- Under Enable coupons, check Enable the use of coupon codes.
- Click Save changes. You can then manage coupons under Marketing → Coupons.
You need an administrator or shop manager account to create and manage coupons.
Create a coupon code
- Go to Marketing → Coupons and select Add new coupon.
- Enter a code such as
WELCOME10, or use Generate coupon code. WooCommerce coupon codes are not case-sensitive. - In Coupon data → General, choose a discount type and enter the amount without a currency or percent symbol. For 10% off, enter
10. - Optionally set an expiration date; WooCommerce stops accepting the coupon on that date. Review the Usage restriction and Usage limits tabs before publishing.
- Click Publish to save the coupon.
Choose the right discount type
The three built-in discount types work differently:
| Discount type | How it works | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage discount | Reduces eligible product prices by a percentage. | 10% off eligible items |
| Fixed cart discount | Applies a fixed discount to eligible cart items, excluding shipping charges. | $10 off the cart |
| Fixed product discount | Subtracts a fixed amount from each eligible item. | $5 off each qualifying item |
For a fixed product coupon, quantity matters: two eligible items with a $5 discount each receive $10 off in total.
Set usage restrictions and limits
Use Usage restriction to set minimum or maximum spend, include or exclude products and categories, exclude sale items, prevent combining coupons, or limit use by billing email.
Under Usage limits, choose from three separate controls:
- Usage limit per coupon: Maximum total redemptions across all customers.
- Limit usage to X items: Maximum quantity receiving a percentage or fixed product discount. This does not apply to fixed cart discounts.
- Usage limit per user: Maximum number of times one customer can use the coupon.
Leave a limit blank if you do not need that particular cap. Select Update to save changes to an existing coupon.
Test the coupon on your storefront
- Add an eligible product to the cart as a customer would.
- Enter the coupon code in the cart and apply it.
- Check the discount and resulting cart total against your intended offer.
- Test an ineligible cart too, such as one below the minimum spend or containing an excluded product, and confirm the code is rejected when it should be.
HoverCraft disables the separate coupon form at checkout, so customers apply coupon codes in the cart first. The theme styles the cart's coupon field, while WooCommerce handles validation and discount calculations. See the WooCommerce Cart and WooCommerce Checkout documentation.
When a coupon does not work
- Code not accepted: Confirm coupons are enabled and the code is correct.
- Coupon expired or exhausted: Check its expiration date and usage limits.
- Cart does not qualify: Check spending thresholds, eligible products, excluded sale items, and any billing email restrictions.
- Free shipping missing: Selecting Allow free shipping on a coupon is not enough by itself. A matching shipping zone must offer the free shipping method with the appropriate requirements. See the official WooCommerce free shipping instructions.
WooCommerce core does not automatically apply a coupon merely because it exists; customers normally enter the code in the cart or checkout flow. For full settings and examples, see the official WooCommerce coupon management documentation.
